Germanwatch is actively lobbying for improving European passenger rail and shifting flights to rail. This means offering more and better rail connections for international trips, making booking of rail tickets easier and rail fares fair compared to more polluting transport modes like cars and flights. We have built a coalition of non-governmental organisations from different European countries that are working towards the same objective – the network ‘Europe on Rail’ is constantly growing (Twitter: @europeonrail). Together with this coalition we have published various policy papers on how to boost cross-border rail in Europe and trigger a European rail renaissance. A public opinion poll, that we conducted in February 2021, shows widespread interest of Europeans in travelling by rail across Europe and in using night trains.
